ForwardL040924 Jill Davis Critical Care Nursing Conference: Fontan - The final procedure before a new journey
The Jill Davis Intensive Care Nursing Fund was created by Stephen and Jodi Davis and their children, Jenny, Tim, and Beth Anne Davis in memory of their daughter and sister Jill. Jill passed away following her open-heart surgery at 13 months. Through this fund, it was their hope to provide annual continuing education to healthcare professionals in intensive care to aid in their ability to provide high-quality patient care, much like Jill received. This conference is designed for nurses and any other health professionals that care for patients in the pediatric critical care setting.
This year the conference will focus on the timeline and care of a Fontan patient from day of diagnosis through adulthood. Within current practices and due to a diverse patient population at Children's, a need to focus on appropriate neurodevelopment care for all ages has been identified as an opportunity for growth. The keynote speaker will share practices shown to improve outcomes when it comes to neurodevelopmental care. The day will also bring opportunities to hear from adults living with the Fontan circulation and their successes and challenges. A family panel will speak about their journey as parents through the process. One of our surgeons will describe current surgical techniques and outcomes, with many more opportunities to hear from our multidisciplinary team including: cardiology, transplant, ethics, rehab, and more! The day will end with a nursing wellness speaker to applaud and recognize all the passion and dedication that healthcare professionals devote to their patients.
The Jill Davis Conference will occur in person from 0800-1600 on April 9th and will have a virtual option. The virtual option is a live stream and will not be recorded to be played back. 6.6 continuing education credits will be available through the Board of Nursing. In addition, lunch, snacks, and refreshments will be provided.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER INFORMATION
Melissa B. Jones, MSN, CPNP-AC is a nurse practitioner and Director of the Neurocardiac Critical Care Program in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) at Children's National Hospital in Washington DC. She is the Past President of the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Society and a past Member-at-Large of the Cardiac Neurodevelopmental Outcome Collaborative.
Melissa is a lead editor for the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Handbook and the PCICS Nurse Curriculum.
As Director of the Neurocardiac Critical Care Program at Children's National, Melissa leads an integrated, multidisciplinary group of clinicians focused on eliminating secondary brain injury, optimizing brain development, and promoting healthy family bonding in the CICU. Her clinical interest is in identifying and addressing CICU-specific modifiable risks to long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes.
Melissa is currently a PhD student at George Washington University focusing on psychological sequelae of parenting a child with congenital heart disease.
Melissa decided to transition from the PICU to the CICU early in her career because she was fascinated with cardiac physiology. She remains passionate about caring for patients and families affected by heart disease. Specifically, supporting parents and families through their CICU journey is a privilege that Melissa is grateful to be a part of.
