L121924 Schwartz Rounds - Structural Failures: Social Determinants of Health, and Chronic Illness: A perfect storm for patient-clinician conflict
Only twenty percent of health is affected by medical treatment. We forget this sometimes as hospital based clinicians. We forget that the journeys patients and families have been on before we see them, and outside of the hospital or clinic, are complex and shaped by structural factors outside of their control. These factors affect how patients and families navigate the world in their bodies, cope, adapt, struggle, and survive. Sickle cell disease is one of these illnesses where treatment for patients is significantly affected by structural racism. This month, our panelists will discuss the case of two sisters whose path collided with our caregivers and presented significant challenges to partnering with them for their own health.
The Schwartz Rounds program offers healthcare providers regularly scheduled time during their fast-paced work lives to openly and honestly discuss the social and emotional issues they face in caring for patients and families. The focus is on the human dimension of health care.
Following a quick multidisciplinary discussion of a topic or case, audience members have an opportunity to share their experiences, thoughts, and feelings and to support each other in best practices of caring for patients and self-care. Schwartz Rounds will be held virtually on the 3rd Thursday of every month and is open to all employees.
