INFORMATION FOR CHILDREN'S MINNESOTA PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATORS

Starting July 1, 2022 prospective research assistants who are students (medical, APP, and some Allied Health) residents, or clinical fellows will be processed through the Medical Education Research Pathway. This partnership between Medical Education and the Research Institute will streamline the onboarding process using Clinician Nexus, Medical Education’s learner management system.

SPONSORING A RESEARCH ASSISTANT AT CHILDREN’S MINNESOTA

Principal Investigators (PIs) at Children’s Minnesota who are interested in having a research assistant support them on a research project must follow one of the two pathways below:

  • If the research assistant is a student (medical student, APP student, Allied Health), use the Medical Education Research Pathway
  • If the research assistant is an undergraduate student (college student, etc) or not affiliated with a graduate medical education training program, continue to partner with Volunteer Services to onboard these assistants as volunteers

HOW DOES THE MEDICAL EDUCATION RESEARCH PATHWAY WORK?

Children’s Minnesota’s PIs and prospective research assistants must sign up for a free Clinician Nexus account in order to complete the required application and onboarding. Prior to the rollout of this new pathway, all existing PIs at Children’s Minnesota have Clinician Nexus accounts built on their behalf. Reach out to Medical Education if you have questions about accessing your account.

Please direct any prospective research assistants to the Children’s Minnesota’s Research Institute’s webpage where information on this process is provided.

PROSPECTIVE RESEARCH ASSISTANT REQUIREMENTS

Prospective research assistants must sign up for a free Clinician Nexus account and search the Clinician Nexus “find clinical experiences” marketplace for a research project at Children’s Minnesota and submit an application. IMPORTANT: The prospective research assistant must already have a sponsoring PI at Children’s Minnesota. This is not an application for prospective research assistants to request an experience or be matched with a PI.

SPONSORING PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR REQUIREMENTS

Once the prospective research assistant’s application is received, they will be matched with their identified sponsoring PI in Clinician Nexus, and the PI will be notified that they have an outstanding onboarding step that must be completed. The sponsoring PI will need to log in to Clinician Nexus (follow the instructions here) to access their outstanding onboarding steps, and complete the required Research Institute application. Once the PI application is received and approved by the Research Institute, the research assistant will begin onboarding to Children’s Minnesota. The PI can monitor the status of the research assistant’s onboarding and will be able to see when they move to an “active” status in the system and are cleared to begin working on the research project.
