Midwest EMSC is hosting the second annual Pediatric Champion/PECC Symposium. This session is focused on ED and Hospital Pediatric Champions/PECCs. 

Target Audience

Physicians and Nurses working with pediatric patients in an emergency department. 

Learning Objectives

  • Review pediatric patient assessment
  • Discuss mass casualty preparedness and improvements
  • Explain common mental heath presentations in the emergency department and explore resources for patients and families
  • Share QI project to assist in addressing pediatric care readiness.

2:05 – 3:05pm – Talking Peds - Pediatric Patients Back to the Basics: Sarah Rauner 
                           Objectives:
                           1. Describe how to approach and assess pediatric patients. 
                           2. Recognize ages and stages that relate to pediatric emergency patients. 
                           3. Explore pediatric pearls of wisdom at a basic level. 
                           4. Discuss pediatric assessment common concerns.

3:10 – 4:10pm – Disasters: Preparedness and Response, Waukesha: Dr. Mo Luetje 
                           Objectives:
                           1. Describe how to prepare for a mass casualty incident with little prep time.
                           2. Explain a process and key components for a health care team debrief following a mass casualty incident.
                           3. Express how to initiate mass casualty and disaster plan improvements within attendees’ respective facilities.
4:10 – 4:15pm – Transition and intro to next speaker
4:15 – 5:15pm – Behavioral Healthcare in the ED: Stephen DeLong

                           Objectives:
                           1. Indicate common mental health presentations to the Emergency Department.
                           2. Identify de-escalation skills.
                           3. Explore mental health supports available to families
5:15 – 5:20pm – Transition and intro to next speaker
5:20 – 6:20pm – Pediatric Readiness - QI in a health system: Dr. Jacques Burgess 

                           Objectives:
                           1. Explore pediatric workgroups purpose to address pediatric readiness.
                           2. Demonstrate the importance of sharing resources, exchanging information, and collaborating on ideas. 
6:20 – 6:30pm – Q&A for all speakers and brief wrap up
