KEYNOTE SPEAKER INFORMATION:

Julia Berg Memorial Lecture on Adolescent Mental Health: Cori Cross, MD

Cori Cross is a board-certified pediatrician and has been serving the LA community since her residency at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) in 2004. Dr. Cross graduated cum laude from Barnard College with a BA in philosophy. She attended The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, where she obtained her M.D. and was elected to the AOA honor society.

Dr. Cross works as an advocate and public educator. She is an American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Spokesperson and uses this platform to advocate for children and educate the public on pediatric and public health issues.

Early in her career, it was evident that screens would have a profoundly different effect on this next generation. She joined the AAP’s Council on Communications and Media and served two terms on the Executive Committee. She was a lead author on the AAP’s “Media Use in School-Aged Children and Adolescents” as well as the accompanying technical report “Children and Adolescents and Digital Media.” She has continued working and educating in this space, giving talks locally and nationally to parents, student, educators and pediatricians. She has partnered with Common Sense Media locally to give panel discussions and nationally to develop resources for pediatricians to address these issues in their offices. In 2017, she won an Outstanding Achievement in Innovation Award from the AAP for her work in creating the Family Media Use Plan Toolkit on HealthyChildren.org. Since then, she has continued to work with the AAP to update these resources and policies.

Woodard L. Colby, MD Memorial Lecture: Tiffany Munzer, MD

Tiffany Munzer is a Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrician and digital media researcher at University of Michigan. She received her medical degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine and completed pediatric residency and fellowship training at the University of Michigan. Her studies have included lab experiments comparing parent-toddler interactions during print book and e-book reading, showing that social-emotional connection, and verbal reciprocity are higher with print books. As a part of a team, she examined ethnic-racial representation in YouTube videos watched by children, finding that racial stereotypes are unfortunately regularly encountered. Her recent work has examined how the pandemic has shaped families’ digital media experiences.

Krishna M. Saxena, MD Endocrine Lecture: Pete Myers, PhD

Pete Myers is founder, Board Chair and Chief Scientist of Environmental Health Sciences, a not-for-profit organization that promotes public understanding of advances in scientific research on links between the environment and human health (www.EHSciences.org). Along with co-authors Dr. Theo Colborn and Dianne Dumanoski, Myers wrote “Our Stolen Future,” a book (1996) that explores the scientific basis of concern for how contamination threatens fetal development and life-long health through endocrine disruption, a term he invented at a 1991 scientific workshop. Dr. Myers received a doctorate in the biological sciences from the University of California, Berkeley. He is an Adjunct Professor of Chemistry at Carnegie Mellon University and a founder of the 2020 chemical start-up, Sudoc.com, which is commercializing unique chemistry that biomimics peroxidase enzymes to remove micropollutants, including many pharmaceuticals and endocrine disrupting chemicals from water.

Max Seham Lecture on Social Pediatrics: Teddie Potter, PhD, RN, FAAN, FNAP

Dr. Potter is deeply committed to climate change and planetary health education. Dr. Potter is the inaugural director of the Center for Planetary Health and Environmental Justice at the School of Nursing at the University of Minnesota and a Fellow in the Institute on the Environment at the University. She is a member of the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments and the American Academy of Nursing Environment and Public Health Expert Panel. She is a member of the Coordinating Committee of Columbia University’s Global Consortium on Climate and Health Education, and the Steering Committee of the Planetary Health Alliance (PHA). She also chairs Clinicians for Planetary Health (C4PH) for the PHA. She serves on the National Academy of Medicine’s Action Collaborative on Decarbonizing the US Health Sector; the Health and Medicine Division of the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM); and the Climate Crossroads committee of NASEM. Her most recent work is founding with the International Council of Nurses, Nursing for Planetary Health, a global nursing movement.
