L120325 CHN Education Series: Penicillin Allergy De-labeling Guideline
Penicillin allergy labels are common in children, but true penicillin allergies are rare. Most children labeled with penicillin allergy can actually tolerate penicillin and other beta-lactam antibiotics, making delabeling a valuable skill for primary care clinicians. This presents an important opportunity to optimize antibiotic therapy and improve patient outcomes.
This educational session will explore penicillin and beta-lactam antibiotic allergies and equip providers with practical approaches to improve care. Learn practical tools to assess allergy risk, guide appropriate testing, and safely remove inaccurate allergy labels from the medical record. We will also cover key red flags that warrant specialist referral and provide resources to support parent and family education. This CHN Education features Allergist Dr. Nicole Chase, MD.
Target Audience
Healthcare clinicians caring for pediatric patients and their families.
Learning Objectives
- Explain why an Outpatient Penicillin Allergy Delabeling Guideline is needed
- Share how to use the CHN Penicillin Allergy Delabeling Guideline to:
- Apply a systematic approach to identify patients with a penicillin allergy label
- Assess the likelihood a patient has a true penicillin allergy empirically or by testing
- Delabel patients who have been incorrectly labeled as penicillin-allergic
- Determine when to consider referral to an Allergy specialist
