L062024 Schwartz Rounds: Helping a Parent with Traumatic Stress through Critical Decision Making in an ICU

We meet parents where they are at, not where we might want them to be. Parents of children who are hospitalized are rarely prepared. Hospitalizations, especially in ICUs happen unexpectedly and sometimes when parents themselves are going through either their own medical issues or dealing with their own struggles in life. This Schwartz Center Rounds, the panel will discuss a case of a newborn admitted to the NICU who would eventually be diagnosed with disorder that limits the ability to move use their muscles and who sustained neurological injury and subsequent respiratory failure. The mother of the child had a significant trauma history related to the death of another child which impacted the team’s ability to join together with her related to some very tough but necessary decisions. 

 

The Schwartz Rounds program offers healthcare providers regularly scheduled time during their fast-paced work lives to openly and honestly discuss the social and emotional issues they face in caring for patients and families. The focus is on the human dimension of health care.

Following a quick multidisciplinary discussion of a topic or case, audience members have an opportunity to share their experiences, thoughts, and feelings and to support each other in best practices of caring for patients and self-care. Schwartz Rounds will be held virtually on the 3rd Thursday of every month and is open to all employees.

Children's Minnesota healthcare providers and staff caring for pediatric patients and their families.

  • Present the social and emotional experience of caring for a patient whose decision maker has significant traumatic stress
  • Discuss the emotional and human experiences of working with a parent who is having difficulty with complex decision making
  • Support clinicians as they care for patients and families in difficult situations
  • Foster perspective sharing to strengthen the care team
