This year's Children’s Respiratory & Critical Care Specialists, P.A. Lecture will be presented by Sapna R. Kudchadkar, MD, PhD, FCCM.

Dr. Sapna Kudchadkar is the Anesthesiologist-in-Chief of the Johns Hopkins Children's Center and Vice Chair for Pediatric Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She is a professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine, pediatrics and physical medicine and rehabilitation at JHUSOM. Her areas of interest include sleep disturbances in critically ill children, pediatric delirium prevention and management, sedation of mechanically ventilated children, pediatric ICU rehabilitation and mobility, and clinical epidemiology and biostatistics.  

Dr. Kudchadkar received her undergraduate degree in both biochemistry and French at Washington University in St. Louis, where she graduated magna cum laude. She went on to attend University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, where she earned her M.D. and completed an internship with the Open Society Institute Soros Community Health Program. She completed residencies in pediatrics at Johns Hopkins Children's Center and in anesthesiology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, followed by clinical fellowships in pediatric critical care and pediatric anesthesiology. Dr. Kudchadkar received her PhD in clinical investigation at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Her primary research focus is the integration of sleep promotion, sedation optimization and delirium prevention to promote early mobility and improve functional outcomes for survivors of pediatric critical illness. Dr. Kudchadkar is the lead PI for the international PARK-PICU study (Prevalence of Acute Rehab for Kids in the PICU, park.web.jhu.edu), which includes >200 sites in the United States, Canada, Brazil, Europe and Australia. She is also the lead PI for an NIH funded 10-hospital stepped-wedge cluster-randomized trial of a multifaceted early mobility program for critically ill children (PICU Up!; NCT04989790) and MPI for an NIH-funded multicenter randomized trial investigating physical rehabilitation and nutrition in pediatric ICU patients (PROXIMUS; NCT05296096)

In April 2013, Dr. Kudchadkar was awarded the Alfred Sommer Scholar award at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, given to Ph.D. candidates "who exemplify scientific excellence, energy, ambition, political acumen and a determination to change the world" through public health research.

Dr. Kudchadkar is a Fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine and the Senior Associate Editor of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. She also serves on the international advisory board of the Lancet Child and Adolescent Health.

This lectureship proudly honors the distinguished career of Dr. Stephen C. Kurachek, a retired pediatrician from Children's Minnesota, who dedicated his professional life to the health and well-being of children. A graduate of the University of Michigan and University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (1978), his commitment to specialized pediatric care led to a residency at the esteemed C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and a fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital.

Throughout his impactful tenure at the University of Michigan, Dr. Kurachek achieved board certifications in pediatric critical care and pediatric pulmonology (through Harvard University), demonstrating a profound depth of expertise in managing complex respiratory and critical illnesses in young patients. Recognizing the broader impact of health behaviors, he also became a certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist through the Mayo Clinic.

Driven by a passion for continuous improvement in healthcare delivery, Dr. Kurachek further completed advanced training programs in quality improvement from the Institute of Healthcare Improvement and Intermountain Healthcare. His dedication to evidence-based practice continues to this day through his involvement in reviewing guidelines for pediatric empyema.

This lectureship serves as a testament to Dr. Kurachek's unwavering commitment to pediatric medicine, his pursuit of excellence in clinical care, and his dedication to advancing the field through continuous learning and quality improvement. It aims to inspire future generations of healthcare professionals to emulate his dedication and make meaningful contributions to the lives of children.

This presentation will be held both in-person in the 2nd Floor Education Center on the Minneapolis Campus with lunch provided while quantities last or virtually. We will try our best to provide a meal for you; however, all is dependent on final number of attendees.
