L102424 Clinical Ethics Case Review - What is Best? Decision-Making for Infants and the Zone of Parental Discretion
Parents are given wide latitude to make decisions for their children consistent with their values. Clinicians also have obligations to individual children as patients. This can lead to conflicts or uncertainties around defining what is best for infants. It can also be unclear where medical best interests and parental authority begin and end. We will present two cases. First, the case of Jenna, an infant with trisomy 18 and respiratory failure whose parents don't want to extubate her but don't want a tracheostomy. Second, the case of Theo, a child hospitalized for a traumatic brain injury and a coincidental finding of biliary atresia whose parents then wish to forgo a Kasai procedure and future transplant. Through these cases we will explore how to navigate nuances between medical facts and clinician obligations, parental values and authority, and decision-making for infants.
Clinical Ethics Case Review will explore real cases to help clinicians understand how to identify, approach, and manage ethical issues. Every other month we will present a real case and review the ethical issues, provide ethical analysis, and discuss ways to approach these in practice. This educational opportunity will be beneficial for all clinical staff and especially for early career clinicians.
These activities will be held bi-monthly, virtual, 4th Thursday from 11:30 – 12:30 pm.
